One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is on a mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Their projects span the globe and are done in partnership with local communities and environmental organizations to create an impact for nature, people, and wildlife. Reforestation helps to restore forests that have been degraded or deforested, provide jobs for social impact, and restore biodiversity habitat. Many projects have overlapping objectives that contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Learn more at onetreeplanted.org
Our Project
Rwanda’s forests support a wealth of biodiversity and natural resources. Through the years, the country has been subject to deforestation due to unsustainable agricultural practices. Smallholder farmers feel the impacts of that degradation, understanding the importance of landscape restoration for water, energy, and food security. By planting trees to help support restoration efforts, this project will help improve food security and empower local women!

Impact
This project will help local communities through mentoring and building the skills of 2,000 farmers to restore land while improving community livelihoods. Planting trees will help improve soil health by adding nutrients while controlling run-off and erosion. When properly managed, these trees will provide the local farmers with firewood, climbing bean poles, and fodder for their animals. For food security and income generation, farmers will plant avocado, lemon, and tree tomatoes. This project will also help steward gender equity by empowering local women to get involved and make an impact.

WHAT IS REFORESTATION?
Reforestation can be defined as the process of replanting trees in areas that have been affected by natural disturbances like wildfires, drought, and insect and disease infestations — and unnatural ones like logging, mining, agricultural clearing, and development. This can mean anything from supporting natural regeneration in an area that has been degraded to planting ecologically appropriate tree seedlings after forest fires.
HOW REFORESTATION HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT?
By planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested, reforestation helps the environment by guaranteeing, or accelerating the re-establishment of healthy forest structure by regrowing the forest canopy and preserving biodiversity within the ecosystem.
REFORESTATION BENEFITS
- Helps carbon sequestrationby fixing atmospheric carbon dioxide in their leaves, trunks, and roots
- Removes air pollutants by absorbing them into their leaves and bark
- Prevents soil erosion by growing roots that hold the soil together
- Provides habitatfor over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity
- Acts as natural air conditionersby reducing ambient air temperatures by up to 8° Celsius
- Reduces the impact of global warming and climate change
- Helps to protect endangered species
- Filters our drinking water through their roots
- Prevents floods and landslides by absorbing water and slowly releasing it via transpiration
We are honored to support reforestation with @onetreeplanted as part of our commitment to sustainability.
